Part time employment gives workers fewer hours to work per week as compared to full time employment. However, some benefits can also be given to people under part time employment. In Australia, federal matters define wages and working conditions of citizens under part time employment below adult age through combining legislations and awards.
Some companies find out that the fewer hours worked engaged in part time employment is more productive than those done in a traditional 40 hour week. This proves that the general belief that major job descriptions cannot be effective when under part time employment is not true. In fact, senior roles can be highly manageable and be performed efficiently even if employee is engaged in a part time employment so long as discipline is present by systematic and appropriate time management.
State and territory matters would differ on the terms of part time employment. The Australian Capital Territory for example defines its legislation on part time employment regulating the employment of under age children to 15. New South Wales has the same regulation for children taking part time employment however safeguarding children between 16-18 years of age from part time employment relevant to machineries, factory and work during night time. In the Northern Territory The Education Act 1979 provides that no children should engage in part time employment between the ages of six and 15 years so that the child will not be unfit or not be able to attend school.
While there is no consistency between the Convention and the Territory law, there is no legislation providing for regulation of hours to also define part time employment or condition of employing a minor. In Queensland, The Education (General Provisions) Act 1989 provides for addressing the concern on the legal minimum age both for full time and part time employment. On the other hand, Western Australia allows a child to engage in part-time employment at any age but restrictions relating to the particular occupation apply. The Child Welfare Act 1947 however limits the engagement of children in street trading thru part time employment to those aged 12.
In the campuses, the main types of part time employment available for students are food, retail and catering services, library student assistants, teachers or faculties take students on a part time employment as research assistants. Students also provide IT support to the university's IT systems helpdesk and other part time employments are offered from time to time in various departments.
